	Due to a historic arrangement and description decision, the multiple number subject filing system of the Department of Justice was not retained as a single series but divided into individual series based on an alphabetical prefix. This does not comply with accepted archival arrangement principles but due to the complexity and number of accessions which have been dealt with in this manner, it has been decided to allow this arrangement to continue until a major rearrangement can be undertaken

	The successor series to the LEG- prefix multiple number subject files (see series 7410), the Law Reform Division files document similar functions and activities, and also the Department's role in monitoring all other legislation for compliance with the NZ Bill of Rights Act 1990.

	

	Information on the files includes the Division's role in providing legal advice to the Department insofar as its' legal obligations, and the position of the Department in cases of litigation and serious industrial relations matters, for example the suspension of staff at Mangaroa Prison. The administrative files contain information also recorded in the Finance and Planning records (these are not yet held by Archives New Zealand).

Most records restricted for 100 years
This restriction is necessitated by the identification of copies of court documents in a range of Ministry files held at Archives New Zealand. 100 years is the restriction that applies to most criminal and family related court records stored at Archives New Zealand. Given that the examples of court documents identified in Ministry files mainly relate to criminal and family related matters, implementing a 100-year access restriction in all Ministry records is appropriate.
Some of the court documents will be subject to suppression or other restrictions imposed by the judiciary.
Many of the records also include personal information of identifiable individuals and are subject to restriction under the Privacy Act 1993.
Some specific records opened by the Ministry of Justice
In response to researchers’ requests, in 2024 the Ministry retrieved all the Information Privacy Bill files at Archives New Zealand (91 items, including 3 files already open).  All the files were reviewed by Ministry of Justice Policy staff, and the Attorney General then agreed to waive privilege on the files.  It was decided that the restrictions can be lifted as there will be more researchers who will want to research this Act. 42 files in this series were opened.
