	 A list of sub-series was compiled from a summary in the classification lists (see series 8958)

	Due to a historic arrangement and description decision, the multiple number subject filing system of the Department of Justice was not retained as a single series but divided into individual series based on an alphabetical prefix. This does not comply with accepted archival arrangement principles but due to the complexity and number of accessions which have been dealt with in this manner, it has been decided to allow this arrangement to continue until a major rearrangement can be undertaken.

	This series was the successor series to the 'J - prefix multiple number subject files (series 500), and was the main administrative series for the Department of Justice - Head Office from c.1975 to c.1995. A wide range of management, procedural, planning, and other administrative functions are covered in this series.

	Series 8958, comprising three volumes of classification lists, provides an overview of the ADM-prefix files and can be used to access files based on subject.

	

	Some files have been top-numbered files from the J - Prefix multiple number files attached. This series was added to over time, either by the creation of a new file series (e.g. 'ADM 44-'), or a sub-series was added to an existing file series (e.g. 'ADM 2-97-').

	

	Although this series was replaced by several other series from 1989 - 1993, the 'ADM 3- Appointment other than Staff' files continued to be used by appointments staff until 1999.

	

	File titles are often misleading. For instance 'General' files contain policy information, and files named 'Policy' often have been used as general/miscellaneous files.

Most records restricted for 100 years
This restriction is necessitated by the identification of copies of court documents in a range of Ministry files held at Archives New Zealand. 100 years is the restriction that applies to most criminal and family related court records stored at Archives New Zealand. Given that the examples of court documents identified in Ministry files mainly relate to criminal and family related matters, implementing a 100-year access restriction in all Ministry records is appropriate.
Some of the court documents will be subject to suppression or other restrictions imposed by the judiciary.
Many of the records also include personal information of identifiable individuals and are subject to restriction under the Privacy Act 1993.
Some specific records opened by the Ministry of Justice
In response to researchers’ requests, in 2024 the Ministry retrieved all the Information Privacy Bill files at Archives New Zealand (91 items, including 3 files already open).  All the files were reviewed by Ministry of Justice Policy staff, and the Attorney General then agreed to waive privilege on the files.  It was decided that the restrictions can be lifted as there will be more researchers who will want to research this Act. One file in this series was opened.
