            [history] => This collection of slides comprises the "master" slides created by the New Zealand Forest Service. A collection of duplicate slides and caption cards was transferred in 1988 to the Forest Research Institute, Rotorua. 

Often when a black and white photograph was taken by the New Zealand Forest Service Photographer, Mr John Johns, a colour and slide photograph would also be taken at the same time and of the same view. Hence for many black and white photographs in the 'M' group of negatives (AAQA 6395) there will also be a colour and slide view of the same shot. The 'M' Negatives and Prints (AAQA 6395), Master Slides (AAQA 6503), 'Col' Colour Negatives and Prints (AAQA 6500) and their associated finding aids are often cross-referenced with the corresponding slide, black and white and colour negative numbers. 

The controlling series for Master Slides (see "Series Relationship") will usually contain cross-references to relevant slide, black and white and colour negative numbers. 

The "Master Slides" are arranged by subject classification. The type of system used for this arrangement is a variation of the Oxford System of Decimal Classification for Forestry. This is the same system that is used to classify the Black and White Reference Prints [AAQA 6506), Col Catalogue [Colour Reference Prints] (AAQA 6508), and the Col Catalogue (Archives) Index (AAQA 6509). 

The Oxford System of decimal classification was authorised by the International Union of Forest Research Organisations in 1953 as the standard universal system of classification and bibliography for forestry organisations. 

This system uses primary subject headings numbered between 0-9. Each primary subject heading is sub-divided for sub-topics by the use of extra digits between 0-9 and can be further sub-divided for further sub-topics by the use of further digits. 

Sub-divisions beyond three digits are shown as decimal points. For instance, primary subject heading 1 is Factor of the Environment. Biology. Sub-heading 11 is Site Factors: Climate, Situation, Soil, Hydrology (Water Conservation, Soil Conservation and Erosion) and the further sub-heading 111 is The Atmosphere. Meteorology. Climate and Microclimate. Sub-heading 111.2 is Radiation and Temperatures. It should be noted that all digits used in this classification system work as decimal points. Therefore, 111 Meteorology will precede 2 Silviculture. Decimal points that are used after three digits are there mainly to break up long numbers. 

The system described above, was adapted for use by the New Zealand Forest Service Photo Library. Not all sub-headings were used, probably because they were not relevant to the photographic collection held by the Photo Library. No primary subject heading O was used, instead this was replaced by the word "Species" with sub-divisions by "Exotic", "Indigenous", "Fruit" etc.

Access to the Master Slides by researchers should primarily be made through the Black and White, Colour, Slide Subject Index (AAQA 6507). This subject index will provide access to the Black and White Reference Prints (AAQA 6506) for a black and white image. It will also provide access to the Col Catalogue [Colour Reference Prints] (AAQA 6508) for a colour image, or directly by subject classification and slide number to the Master Slides. All of these finding aids will usually be cross-referenced so that particular images should provide references to associated black and white, colour, or slide numbers. 

The 'Col' Colour Negative Caption Index (AAQA 6502), the Negative Registers (AAQA 6505) and the Colour Slide Caption Register (AAQA 6514), will also provide access, but as they are arranged chronologically or numerically by the negative or slide number, they are more time consuming to use than the Black and White, Colour Slide Subject Index. They may, however, provide further information on a particular image that may be of assistance. 

There is also a large group of "Historical" slides, (separate from the 902 Historical Slides), housed in subject classification order at the end of drawer 4. (AAQA 6503/4).

            [ricClassificationDescription] => The Master Slides are arranged by subject classification.  The system used is an adaptation of the Oxford System of Decimal Classification for Forestry. (See Section 18).  All Master Slides bear an 'M' alpha prefix followed by the slide number.

No public access is permitted to negatives, slides or unique prints held within the New Zealand Forest Service Photographic Collection.  These items are held in secure areas and public access to these areas can only be allowed in exceptional circumstances.  Access to the collection must be made through the appropriate publicly available finding aids.
