            [history] => Each caption index card contains information that will be of use to the researcher. Information contained in these cards often includes: 

- 'Col' colour negative number 
- number of negatives, contacts or positives held 
- maker of film used, re Kodak 
- relevant black and white negative and slide numbers 
- caption 
- photographer 
- date of photograph 
- subject classification reference 

Cards for negatives that were deemed to be of a historic subject are stamped "Historic". This is supposedly to insure that these negatives would not be destroyed (see AAQA 6509). 

Some cards are stamped "withdrawn" where the relevant negative has been destroyed. 

Often when a colour photograph was taken by the Forest Service Photographer (usually John Johns), he would also take a black and white photograph and a slide shot of the same scene. Hence for many of the colour negatives in this collection, there is often a black and white and a slide view of the same scene taken at the same time. Therefore, usually the 'M' Black and White Negatives and Prints (AAQA 6395), the Master Slides (AAQA 6503), the 'Col' Colour Negatives and Prints (AAQA 6500) and their associated finding aids, will often be cross-referenced with the corresponding slide, black and white, and colour negative numbers. 

The subject classification reference on the caption index cards is used to locate the appropriate print within the Col Catalogue [Colour Reference Prints] (AAQA 6508). 

Colour negative captions from Col 1831 to Col 2801 can be located in the relevant Negative Register (AAQA 6505).
