            [history] => The majority of photographic in the 'M' series black and white negatives and prints were taken by the then New Zealand Forest Service photographer Mr John Johns and cover a wide range of subjects. 

This series of negatives and prints may have been constructed as a 'master series' of negatives to succeed the older No Prefix (series 6400), 'H' (series 6393), 'L' (series 6394) and 'F' (series 6398) groups of negatives. 

Access by researchers should primarily be made through the Black and White, Colour, Slide Subject Index (series 6507). This subject index will provide access to the Black and White Reference Prints (series 6506) for a print image, or directly by negative number to the 'M' negatives and prints. 

The Negatives Registers (series 6505) will also provide access, but as they are arranged chronologically they are more time consuming to use than the Black and White, Colour, Slide Subject Index. They will, however, provide additional information that may be of assistance, such as date of photograph, relevant slide or colour negative numbers, etc. 

Often when a black and white photograph was taken, a colour and slide photograph would also be taken at the same time. Hence for 'M' negatives and prints there is often a corresponding colour and slide image which was taken at the same time and at the same location. 

Therefore the 'M' Negatives and Prints, the Master Slides (series 6503) and the 'Col' Colour Negatives and Prints (series 6500) and their associated finding aids, will usually be cross-referenced with the corresponding slide, black and white, and colour negative numbers. 

Some spare copies of 'M' series prints have been stored separately from the Black and White Reference Prints (series 6506) and are called 'Spare Prints' (series 6501). 

There is a gap in the 'M' negative sequence from M3838 to M7518. This is due to a change in the print numbers system to bring the print numbers into line with the negative numbers.
