            [history] => It is not known why the 'L' series group of negatives were created. They are one of the 'older' groups of negatives such as the 'H' (AAQA 6393), 'F' (AAQA 6398) and No Prefix (AAQA 6400) negatives, which were probably superseded by the 'M' series negatives and prints (AAQA 6395). The 'L' black and white negative images cover a wide range of subjects. 

Access by researchers should primarily be made through the Black and White, Colour, Slide Subject Index (AAQA 6507). This subject index will provide access to the Black and White Reference Prints (AAQA 6506) for a print image, or directly by negative number to the 'L' negatives and prints. 

The Negatives Registers (AAQA 6505) will also provide access, but as they are arranged chronologically they are more time consuming to use than the Black and White, Colour, Slide Subject Index. They will, however, provide additional information that may be of use to the researcher, such as date of photograph caption etc. 

The Black and White Contact Print Registers (AAQA 6504) are also arranged chronologically and often contain information such as date of photograph and caption. As many negatives were 'deleted' or 'withdrawn' and destroyed, the contact prints in the Contact Print Registers are often the only record of that image still surviving. 

Often when a black and white photograph was taken by the Forest Service photographer, a colour and/or slide photograph would also be taken at the same time. Hence between 1951-53 for 'L' series negatives, there are sometimes corresponding colour and/or slide images which were photographed at the same time and at the same location. 

Some spare copies of 'H' series prints have been stored separately from the Black and White Reference Prints (AAQA 6506) and are called "Spare Prints" (AAQA 6501).
