	It is probable that the 'H' black and white negatives were originally produced by the National Publicity Studies on behalf of the State Forest Service. A numerical card index is contained within the Communicate New Zealand (National Publicity Studios) Collection, which indexes 'H' negatives from H1001-H1922 (see AAQT 6547).

	

	It is not known why the 'H' series group of negatives were created. They are one of the 'older' main groups of Forest Service negatives such as the 'L' (AAQA 6394), 'F' (AAQA 6398) and No Prefix (AAQA 6400) negatives, that were probably superseded by the 'M' series negatives and prints (AAQA 6395). The 'H' black and white negative images cover a wide range of subjects.

	

	Access by researchers should primarily be made through the Black and White, Colour, Slide Subject Index (AAQA 6507). This subject index will provide access to the Black and White Reference Prints (AAQA 6506) for a print image, or directly by negative number to the 'H' negatives and prints.

	

	The Black and White, Colour, Slide Subject Index. They will, however, provide additional information that may be of use to the researcher, such as date of photograph, caption etc.

	

	The Black and White Contact Print Registers (AAQA 6504) are also arranged chronologically and often contain information such as date of photograph and caption. As many negatives were 'deleted' or 'withdrawn' and destroyed, the contact prints in the Contact Print Registers are often the only record of that image still surviving.

	

	Some spare copies of 'H' series prints have been stored separately from the Black and White Reference Prints (AAQA 6506) and are called "Spare Prints" (AAQA 6501).

	Preservation restrictions and access arrangements

	Some records held by Archives New Zealand are protected under section 49(1)(a) of the Public Records Act 2005.

	Negatives and photographs (prints) in the New Zealand Forest Service collection have some restrictions for preservation reasons.

	Non-unique photographs may be requested through Archway.  Gloves must be worn when handling photographs. Supplies are held in the Archives New Zealand Reading Room (Wellington), and are available on request.

	Negatives and unique photographs (prints) are held in secure, climate controlled areas, and access to these is by appointment only.  Contact Archives New Zealand for permission to view or the availability of alternative access provisions. 

	Reproducing images

	Written permission to reproduce images from the New Zealand Forestry Service collection must be obtained from the Chief Archivist, Archives New Zealand, Wellington.
