	Established in 1894, the Court of Arbitration comprised representatives of unions and employers, presided over by a court judge. In situations where unions and employers could not agree on terms of an employment agreement, or award, they could appeal to the Arbitration Court, whose decision was legally binding. Up to 1940 this court also oversaw workers' claims for compensation.

	These files of the Auckland Court of Arbitration relate to employment issues such as awards, agreements and disputes. Names of parties and details of the case were included in the file, in addition to the outcome or decision.

	The Industrial Relations Act 1973 replaced the Court of Arbitration with an Industrial Court and created an Industrial Commission.
