The alternative reference numbers are the original company numbers which can be both the annual number or the later single number - where two alternates are given the original file annual number was top numbered with a single number.

This series contains files about particular companies registered under the Joint Stock Companies Act 1860 and its successors, and from around 1989  incorporated societies and charitable trusts registered under the Incorporated Society Act 1908, the Charitable Trust Act 1957 and their successors. The companies, societies and trusts were registered in the Auckland area, but had ceased to operate or became insolvent, they were then 'struck off' the register and were dissolved. This action was published in The New Zealand Gazette.
The files may contain the following material:

memorandum of association detailing the purposes/objects of the business, society or trust
articles of association detailing company shares, directors, meetings etc
annual returns
details of the dissolution of the company, society or trust.

The files were originally classified using an annual  number system or a single number system. When files were closed they were given a new dead company number allocated on a running number system. The files in this series have been arranged by dead company number. However, the original number has been captured (where known) in the alternative reference field.
