These files comprise the incident and offence files for the Auckland Central Police district. Incident and offence files contain details of investigations undertaken by the police. These are generally in response to reported crimes, but could also include other investigations such as accident or missing persons investigations and search and rescue operations. The files include offence codes, and names of subjects, offenders, suspects, victims, and witnesses, as well as crime reports and details of investigations and evidence.
In 1977 the Police Department set up a database linked to their main Wanganui computer system to provide a national indexing and recording system for files created in the course of police work. Called Document Locator, the database system stored information within various separate file types in such a way as to enable accurate location and retrieval of them.
As each new file was created, it was identified by the date of entry and by a number, which was assigned nationally by the system sequentially and indicated whereabouts in the database the entry was stored, for example 800617/7830 means that the file was entered on 17 June 1980 and the number next available was 7830. Subsequent entries on that date after 7830 would have received 7831, 7832 and so on. Each day the number reverted to zero and the maximum number was 9999. Because the system was a national system, the next available number was assigned regardless of region.
Prior to 1977, incident and offence file numbers were manually allocated on an annual-single number system, although some variation of this system seems to have occurred within districts. The Wanganui computer was no longer used for the allocation of offence file numbers and was decommissioned in 2005.
Note that the series holdings dates predate the date of the series as a result of earlier content being included on files created within this series
