This series contains application forms from settlers under the Waikato immigration scheme of the 1860's. Waikato immigrants were entitled to Crown grants after three years, and could also purchase contingent lands on certain conditions. They filled in application forms, had them witnessed by a Justice of the Peace, and sent them to the Waikato Settlement Office in Auckland. A tear-off receipt was returned to them. (In some instances, the receipt remains attached to the application; the reason for this is not evident). 

Each form records the names of the immigrant and family, name of substitute (if any), date of arrival and name of ship, locality and lot number, contingent land details and any implements or seeds supplied (and any money owing for these). There is the declaration signed by the applicant, which includes also provision for the occupation and address of the applicant, although these details are not always given. 
 
These application forms clearly show substitutions of another person for the original immigrant. The reason for substitution may also be shown, especially if the original immigrant had died. 

Additional documents are sometimes found attached to the application form. A few emigration agreements survive - for some immigrants from Cape Town. They are the immigrants' copies of agreements made with the Auckland emigration agent at the Cape, and include a summary of the conditions of the immigration scheme. In at least one instance (application 645) there are also copies of marriage and death registrations and notices of transfer of land allotments. The application forms are therefore worth checking in cases such additional documents are attached. 

The applications are arranged in files of 50 applications each. Some have not survived. To find a particular application, it is necessary to know the application number, then check the list of items to find the archives reference for the relevant file of applications (if held).
