	Miscellaneous files contained material on companies winding up, aged and infirm persons, changes of name by deed poll (pre-1950s), criminal and civil appeals, applications by solicitors for admission to the bar, or anything else that did not fit in other registered filing systems run by the Christchurch Supreme/High Court.

	Agency is both an early term for miscellaneous, and also for cases referred to the court by another Supreme Court. In 2003, the series ended when the Courts moved to a new electronic system, that registered and controlled all Court files using a single running number.

	All Miscellaneous/General Register court files held by Archives New Zealand are subject to a minimum access restriction period of 60 years from the date of file closure.

	Files containing sensitive personal information, or information about criminal cases are restricted for 100 years from their dates of closure, in line with relevant legislation.

	Files containing adoption information are restricted indefinitely, in line with relevant legislation.

	Archivists must consult the appropriate controlling register (and/or the file) to determine the correct access restriction of individual files.

	Most of the files and individual file listings have a precautionary 100 year access restriction applied. The files and individual file listings covering the years 1918-1931, 1966-1969, 1972-1974, 1977-1978 and 1987-1988 have a precautionary indefinite access restriction applied, in line with the associated Miscellaneous Registers that contain adoption entries [CH131/51, CH131/64, CH692/10, CH692/13 and CH963/22].
