            [history] => Licensing committees were established under the Licensing Act 1881. They were responsible for granting liquor licences within their respective licensing districts. The boundaries of licensing districts roughly corresponded with local body boundaries.

Each committee was headed by a chairman who was a Magistrate. The other committee members were either elected directly by residents, or were appointed by local authorities.

Information recorded in these minutes includes the name of the premises, names of the owners, names of the holders of the license, disqualifications and convictions, and details of applications and licences issued. 

Prior to the Licensing Committees, Licensing Courts were held for Licensing Districts (this system was established under the Licensing Act 1873).
