	This series consists of the Returns of Livestocks that were submitted to the Taranaki Relief Commission in support of claims for compensation of losses and damage to property during the First Taranaki War (New Zealand Wars).

	The constitution of the forms was set out under the Cattle Ownership Ordinance 1862, which was enacted by the Taranaki provincial Council.

	The returns are pre-printed forms, which are headed, RETURN, under provisions of "The Cattle Ownership Ordinance, 1862," shewing the number of Horses, Neat Cattle, and Sheep owned by [name of claimant added] between the 22nd February, 1860, and the [date added], have the following columns:

	

		Class of Stock;
	

		Sex;
	

		Age at date of Registry;
	

		Brand, if any;
	

		Prevailing colour;
	

		Colour of muzzle;
	

		Colour of ears;
	

		Colour of tail;
	

		Colour of neck;
	

		Other special marks or peculiarities;
	

		Description of horns, if any;
	

		If lost, when and how;
	

		If disposed of in any way and how;
	

		Date of such disposal;
	

		To whom;
	

		If acquired since February 22, 1860, from whom and when;

	The returns were originally arranged using a straight-number system of classification, between the numbers 1 to 433, and is a parallel series related to the Compensation Claim files (series 28302). At some stage after creation, the files were rearranged into rough alphabetical order by claimant surname.
