	This series series consists of Compensation Claim files relating to the distribution of money from the Taranaki Relief Fund to Taranaki settlers claiming compensation for loss of property during the First Taranaki War.

	The files consist some or all of the following:

	

		statements from claimants;
	

		supporting statements from other persons;
	

		a form entitled Statement of Losses or Injuries Sustained in the Recent Native Distrubances at Taranaki;
	

		supplementary statements;
	

		receipts for payments.


	One file contains an enclosure from the Taranaki Relief Fund Correspondence files.

	Claim files were originally arranged using a straight-number system of classification, between the numbers 1 to 433, and includes a small number of supplementary files are un-numbered. At some stage after creation, the files were rearranged into rough alphabetical order by claimant surname.
