	The Special Subject Files are a separate series of large files on particular subjects, created by the Canterbury Provincial Government. The majority of the files are made up of inwards letters drawn from correspondence received variously by the Provincial Secretary [ICPS], the Secretary for Public Works [ICPW], and the Railways Office [ICR], but there are also some files consisting of Provincial Council papers [PPC], such as resolutions. They were kept separately from their predecessor series, presumably for ease of reference. They cover a range of subjects such as railways, weights and measures, native affairs, immigration, public health, and education. Like the main inwards correspondence series, these files also include returns, reports, and occasionally maps and plans. The letters retain their original numbering from their predecessor series, i.e. the registered number and date of receipt as recorded in the corresponding inwards correspondence registers of the Provincial Secretary, Secretary for Public Works or Railways Office.

	The contents of the two Native Affairs Special Subject Files have been listed item by item; all the other files have a general descriptive title.
