The Adoption Order was the key legal document in the process of adopting a child. As required by the Adoption Act 1881 (and subsequent legislation), a copy of the Adoption Order document was retained by the Court. This series of volumes contained copies of the adoption order documents as approved by the Court Magistrate.
The original copy of the adoption order was given to the successful applicant with the court retaining a copy. Copies were also sent to the Child Welfare Branch of the Department of Education and to the District Child Welfare Officer. A copy of the Adoption Order was also retained in the adoption case file.
Details contained in the Adoption Order document included:
- Date, place and name of magistrate/judge who heard the application.
- Birth name of child, age at adoption.
- Name of adopting parent.
- Date of issue.
