	The files in this series contain legal papers relating to divorce hearings held at the Napier Supreme/High Court.

	Documents within the records generally include copies of decrees absolute and decrees nisi, copies of affidavits in support of the divorce, and often copies of marriage certificates.

	The files were controlled by Registers (Series 6042) which detailed names of parties to the divorce, register number, dates of the different stages of the proceedings, and dates of grant of decree nisi and decree absolute.

	Under the 1980 Family Proceedings Act, responsibility for divorce cases was transferred to the newly created Family Courts in 1981.

		Dissolution of Marriage or Civil Union Records
	

		Under both High Court Rules and Family Court Rules, former parties to a marriage or a civil union have an unrestricted right to obtain a copy of the order dissolving the marriage or civil union. These dissolution orders can be viewed at, or copies obtained from Archives New Zealand on production of sufficient proof of identity (photo identification e.g. passport/drivers’ license).
	

		For all other divorce files requiring access:
	

		Restricted 100 years from last date on file. Requests for access should be directed to the Napier High Court.
