	Before 1948 Crown leases and licences were issued under many Acts and Regulations. In 1948 the land laws were amended and consolidated in a Land Act which repealed 78 other Acts or parts of Acts.

	A lease (commonly called a tenancy) was an interest in land for a fixed term. Under a lease the lessee had exclusive right of possession of the land. Under a licence the licensee merely had the right to do some act in relation to the licensor's land which would otherwise be unlawful.

	Each type of tenure had a different alphabetical abbreviation, which formed part of the file classification system. The files were arranged alphabetically by these prefixes, and numerically within each tenure type.

	Examples of some tenure type abbreviations were as follows:
