The papers contained in the files included applications for orders of adoption, copies of birth certificates, adoption orders, reports on the character and suitability of adoptive parents (including reports by Police and Child Welfare) and papers giving the consent of the birth mother or birth parents.
Information found in the files included the full name of birth parent(s), child (before and after adoption), adoptive parents, birth date of child, address and occupation of birth parent(s) and adoptive parents.
The front of each file usually showed the adoption number, as well as the Magistrate's Minute Book entry number and page (folio) number.
Adoption files pre-1916
On 21 March 1941, the Minister of Justice, acting per Gazette rule 1940/270, ordered that all adoption files dated prior to 1 January 1916 should be transferred to the Registrar-General for safe-keeping.
Files number 91 (dating from 1916) belonged to an earlier sequence of adoption file numbering but has been interspersed with the corresponding numbers from the sequence that was begun in 1917. The numbering of files started from 1 again in 1917.
This series also included files transferred from smaller courts (Mataura, Tapanui). These files had separate number sequences but they were incorporated into Gore sequence.
Some files included later correspondence relating to access to information.
