This series contains coroner's inquest case files created between 1844 and 1874, when no regular system of classification for such files existed. At some time prior to transfer, the files were arranged by the province the inquest was held in (based on the provincial system of government exercised in New Zealand between 1853 and 1876).

During the period 1844 and 1874, coroners were required to inquire into the manner of death of any person who was slain, drowned, died suddenly, or died in the custody of the state while in prison or a lunatic asylum. Inquests were also held to inquire into the cause or origin of any fire where any building, ship, or merchandise, or any stack of corn pulse, or hay, or any growing crop, was destroyed or damaged.

The files contain deposition of witnesses, and the verdict of the coroner or coroner's jury.

Coroner's inquest case files for the same period can also be found in the inwards correspondence files of the Department of Internal Affairs (then known as the Colonial Secretary's Office), series 8333, and in the inwards correspondence files of the Department of Justice, series 16211.
