	The records in this series were previously described in Army Department Record Group AD31 (series  8660) item 26 (item code R22496035), entitled Applications for, and papers relating to, the award of New Zealand war medals [4 bundles]. They were transferred to the National Archives of New Zealand by the Department of Maori Affairs in accession W698, in 1966. These records have now been descibed individually in the GAIMS descriptive system.

	This series contains correspondence and reports relating to the issuing of the New Zealand War Medal (also referred to as the New Zealand Medal) to veterans of the New Zealand Wars, created by the Department of Defence (known then as the Colonial Defence Office).

	The records in this series were created within the annual single number system of classifying inwards correspondence received by the Colonial Defence Office  (see series 27201). Each piece of correspondence in a given year was registered with a unique number, preceeded by prefix 'CD' or 'N&D'. For example, the first letter received in 1863 would have been registered 'CD 1864/1', the second 'CD 1863/2' etc. This number and the details of the letter were then entered into a book register. Indexes were also compiled.

	Matters documented in these records include the engraving, shipping and distribution of the medal, as well as applications and claims. Also contained in this series are rolls and lists of medal recipients, and progress reports of commissioners who were appointed to investigate claims for the medal.

	The Department of Defence managed this series of records separately from its inwards correspondence files. The register entry for each piece of correspondence indicates that they were disposed of by being filed in the "Medal papers".
