	Earlier cadastral record maps used an Imperial scale (ie inches and miles), and were hand coloured. The record maps were gradually redrawn using a metric scale on the basis of recompilation from the cadastral survey plans, beginning in 1972. These later maps, in this series, were monochrome (black and white).

	The purpose of the record map1 was:

	a record of land title surveys, indicating clearly the basic subdivisions with the latest subdivisions superimposed;

	a plan record;

	a basis for mapping generally, including the NZMS 261 series and other cadastral maps, and for the Electoral Record Map series.

	They were used by surveyors, draughting staff and administrators as a definitive record of the current cadastral pattern.2

	Record maps are sometimes referred to as "Record Sheets" or "Block Sheets".
