	In the disputed lands, mainly in the districts of Mongonui and Hokianga, the Crown acquired large areas for which scrips were issued, and later, when these areas were surveyed, the scrip plans were produced.

	Scrip Claims

	Application was to be made for an exchange, the quantity and locality and the Commissioner who investigated the claim were to be stated, and the claimant was to be allowed 1 credit for every acre recommended by the Commissioner to be awarded. Should the Commissioners find a claimant entitled to, say, 1,000 acres, and had the claimant applied to exchange this land, then Governor Fitzroy would authorize Treasury to issue scrip or land credit for £1,000 to purchase land at some future Government auction of Crown land.

	In many cases where there were Maori disputes over the land in question and where it was thought undesirable to grant the land, the claimant was awarded scrip on the above basis.

	

	In some instances where the Crown had acquired and sold land, it was found that a claim was within the boundaries of the land sold by the Crown, and scrip was issued as compensation, and in other instances and for various reasons Governor Fitzroy granted an extension of scrip over and above the equivalent number of acres recommended to be granted.
