	The files in this series contain legal papers, correspondence, affidavits of character and means of adoptive parents, and copies of birth certificates relating to the adoption of children through the Motueka Magistrate's/District Court. Adoptions were processed under the Adoption of Children Acts of 1881 and 1895, the Infants Act 1908, and the Adoption Act 1955.

	Information given includes names, ages and occupations of adoptive parents, and birth name and date of birth of the child to be adopted. Also included are reasons for adoption - including where the child is the natural child of one of the adoptive parents, who has subsequently married and wishes to officially adopt the child together with their new partner.

	Documents contained in these files include some or all of the following:

	

		Application for adoption order;
	

		Reference affidavit;
	

		Birth parent consents;
	

		Child's original birth certificate;
	

		Character report on the adopting parents conducted by the Police;
	

		Child Welfare Officers report.


	This series was superseded by the introduction of the Court's Case Management System (CMS) in 2003.
