	The series start date is based on the start dates for series 649 and 7297, and the series end date is based on the date the last file was created, 1996.

	Archives New Zealand created this artificial series to describe the records inherited by the Department of Conservation, Nelson/Marlborough Conservancy Office, from the Department of Lands and Survey offices in the Nelson-Marlborough region (Blenheim and Nelson District offices). The files were transferred as a combined group of Lands and Survey records, and not by each district office.

	This artificial series contains files created by the Department of Lands and Survey, Blenhiem and Nelson District Offices, within their respective recordkeeping systems, and managed within those systems by the Department of Conservation, Nelson/Marlborough Conservancy Office. The Department of Conservation became responsible for these records when it inherited some of the functions of the Department of Lands and Surveys, which was disestablished in April 1987.

	The files are arranged by multiple number subject systems of classification (see series 649 and 7297), and an alpha-numeric system of classifcation.

	Information in the files relates the to enforcement of relevant legislation and regulations, the management of national parks, reserves, domains, and walkways in the Nelson-Marlborough region, as well as the management of Crown land.

	The Department of Conservation continued to create files in this series until 1996, with the last document added in 2003.
