	In the context of New Zealand law, an action is the lawful demand of one's rights.  Actions (also known as Civil Actions, and as Civil Proceedings from 1986) were cases in which a person or body/organisation (plaintiff) exercised this right in relation to another person or body/organisation (defendant).

	Actions were brought under civil statute (the legal process applying to disputes between individuals or organisations) as opposed to criminal statute (relating to criminal proceedings by the Crown).  Disputes that were brought to Court as actions include: breach of contract, defamation, the recovery of debts or chattels, claims for pecuniary damages.

	The Action generally commenced with a writ of summons filed by the plaintiff, along with a statement of the plaintiff’s claim.  The writ required the defendant to file a statement of his defence to the plaintiff’s claim within a specified timeframe and at a specified office of the Court (which generally had to be the Court office closest to the defendant’s residence).

	In addition to the writ of summons and statements of claim and defence, the case files comprise documents admitted as evidence, testimony and judgments, affidavits and, occasionally exhibits (such as advertising, photographs, drawings, gazette notices).

	System of arrangement and control

	The Whanganui Civil Proceedings files are arranged using the annual single number system of classification.

	All files in this series are controlled by the Civil Proceedings registers (Series 521).

	Existing court record keeping systems were superseded by the introduction of the Case Management System throughout all New Zealand's High Courts from 2003 onwards.
