	The files in this series contained legal papers, correspondence, affidavits of character and means of adoptive parents, and copies of birth certificates relating to the adoption of children through the Oamaru District Court .

	The front of each file showed the names of adopting parents and adoptive child, and may also have shown the  adoption number, Magistrate's Minute Book entry number and page (folio) number, or both the adoption number and minute-book number.  The date of birth and names of birth parents of the child was given, although the birth father was often not named.  The date of application for adoption and date of adoption was also shown.  In some cases a couple adopted a child born to the adopting woman before marriage to the adoptive father, so the birth mother and adoptive mother may be the same.

	From 1912 to 1955 Court adoption records usually contained the following documents:

	

		application for adoption order
	

		Police report
	

		reference affidavits
	

		birth parent consents
	

		child's original birth certificate 
	

		Child Welfare Officer's report.


	Adoption files pre-1916

	On 21 March 1941 , the Minister of Justice, acting per Gazette rule 1940/270, ordered that all adoption files dated prior to 1 January 1916 should be transferred to the Registrar-General for safe-keeping.  Correspondence documenting the transfer of pre-1916 Oamaru Adoption files is included in Series 25064 -  Oamaru Adoption Case File Registers.

	This series was superseded by the introduction of the Court's Case Management System (CMS) around 2003.
