	These records were originally held at Archives New Zealand in Wellington (series L24) and transferred to Archives New Zealand in Auckland Office in 2013.  Certificate of entry butts for Chinese arrivals at Wellington are held in series 8836 at Archives New Zealand in Wellington.

	The certificate butts were listed individually in 2012 to enable keyword searching by name. As the butts are handwritten it is often difficult to ascertain the correct spelling of names. Researchers should try any alternative spelling of names if their search is initially unsuccessful. It is also likely that some name spellings recorded accurately by Archives NZ may be a misprint on the Customs officer's behalf.

	These books contain the butts from certificates of entry issued to Chinese people entering New Zealand at Auckland. Every certificate of entry has now been listed individually, person by person. The certificates give the following information:

	- Name

	- Where born

	- Apparent age

	- Former place of residence

	- Ship arrived by and where from

	- Fingerprints (on certain volumes from 1904 onwards)

	- Photographs, for most people, from1921 onwards

	The certificates also show the amount of 'poll tax' each Chinese immigrant was expected to pay. From 1881 it was expected that £10 would be paid, and ships arriving in New Zealand could only land one Chinese passenger per 10 tons of cargo. After 1896 this tax was increased to 100 pounds. The poll tax was waived by the Minister of Customs from 1934, though it was not repealed until 1944.

	Certificates were prescribed under Section 7 of the Chinese Immigrants Act 1881 and subsequent acts (i.e. Section 2 of The Chinese Immigrants Act Amendment Act, 1896, and Section 33 of The Immigration Restriction Act 1908).

	Some Chinese Immigration applications and photographs are held in series 5575.
