                    [0] => The field books in this series were issued by the Department of Lands and Survey for surveys authorised by the Department in the Gisborne region. These are the original field record of survey work for all crown requirements and legalisation plans, and record all data for the drawing of survey plans. They were retained as an record of the original survey, and were used for the original drawing of survey plans, the authentication of existing plans and for redrawing lost plans. Some of the older Field Books have Settlers' names, English and Maori place names, buildings and other structures shown on them. They may also have drawings by the surveyors, some of whom were accomplished artists, of landscapes from the area being surveyed. The field books record observations of bearing, vertical angle, and distance made by the surveyor in the field. They include topographical detail and other general information required for the determination of boundaries and accurate delineation of the survey.

	These small volumes contain surveying information such as measurements and bearings to trigs and other geographical markers, as well as surveyed traverses of rivers and land blocks, sketch plans and maps, often with an indication of topography, as well as elevation sketches showing the silhouettes of hills, and other information used for mapping.

	The volumes sometimes also include landscape drawings, diary notes, lists of items needed, sketches of people, poems and notes.

	Field book references can be found on survey office plans, or through the field book registers if the surveyor's name is known. Register entries may also give a general indication of the district, but do not usually specify exact location.

	Field books for Gisborne were also created in the Napier (Hawkes Bay) and both Auckland field book series. Some of these were top-numbered into the Gisborne series, but many transferred to Gisborne retained their original numbers and can be found listed in these earlier series.

	Note that some field books for Gisborne may still be held in the Hamiton office of Land Information New Zealand. In 2018 field books from the whole of New Zealand were digitised on behalf of LINZ by NZ Micrographics in Wellington.
