	These are original field record of survey work for all crown requirements and Legalisation Plans. These field books were issued to Surveyors by the former Department of Lands and Survey.

	Some of the older Field Books have Settlers' names, English and Maori place names, buildings and other structures shown on them. They may also have drawings of landscapes of the area that the surveyor was working in. Some surveyors were very good artists. They are a record of observation of bearings, vertical angles, and measurements the surveyor made in the field in the course of their survey. The books also contain topographical details, occupations, and general information required for the determination of boundaries and accurate delineation of the survey.

	These are the most authentic and important records of all, for without them no survey plan could be drawn, nor could lost or damaged plans be redrawn There are 2 main avenues for locating a field book,  they are from a reference shown on the Plan face or by perusal of the Field Book Register if you know the surveyors name. Occasionally reference to the field book can be found recorded on the traverse sheets. As well as field books being issued by the Chief Surveyors of the various Land Districts, they were also issued by the Geodetic Division and Photogrametric Branch of Lands & Survey in National Office.
