An Application (or 'A') Plan was a survey plan prepared to support an application to the District Land Registrar to bring land out of the Deeds System and into the Land Transfer System Under the Land Transfer Act 1870 and subsequent Acts. The plans date from 1874 to c. 2001, but the items held are aperture card copies of the original plans, made from 1972 onwards. Once the application was approved and the Certificate of Title issued, the application plans became Deposited Plans, though the continued existence of these application plans suggest new copies may have been made for this purpose. The aperture card copies often consist of a single copy of the full plan together with enlarged copies of parts of the plan.

	From the early 1970s onwards the Lands and Survey Department conducted an extensive project to photograph all its plan records. The task was continued by Land Information New Zealand and was completed by 2001.

	Several sets of copies were made, and held in different offices for administrative purposes. The two sets held by Archives NZ were held originally by Lands & Survey Auckland and the Auckland Land Titles Office. They can be distinguished by the positioning of a dark stripe on the top edge of each card.

	

	The original plans date from the mid 1800s to the beginning of the Twenty-first Century.

	

	Researchers should have the correct 'A' plan number when requesting these items - see application plan indexes (in numerical order) held by Archives New Zealand, Auckland. Application plan numbers can also sometimes be found on other records such as Deposited Plans, in Gazette notices and on some Certificates of Title. The applications themselves, which also give plan numbers, are still held by Land Information New Zealand.

	The plans provide a cross-reference to Certificate of Title register and folio number.

	Other information in the plans includes legal description of the land, name of surveyor and land owner, description of boundaries, cross-references to plans of neighbouring land, to Crown Grants, Gazette notices and other plans including Deeds plans and deposited plans.

	Note that these plans have been filmed in black and white. The originals were coloured, and contained references to specific colours in the plans - eg "Area coloured pink" ; "Firm blue lines" - this means that some of the information in the plan is lost or unclear.
