	This series consists of field diaries that were written by Mavis Davidson – the noted biologist who received international recognition, such as the gold badge of honour for her research on sika deer.

	She was very much a pioneer, being one the first women to work for the New Zealand Forest Service where she served from 1958. During her career in the NZ Forest Service Mavis's major research involved the study of introduced deer, especially the small Japanese sika deer. She became a world authority on sika deer. Her major study areas were in the Oamaru Valley (Kaimanawa-Kaweka Forest Parks) from 1963 to 1966 and Kuripapango in the southern Kaweka Range from 1967 to 1974. After retirement, she moved to Leigh in Northland in 1983 where she continued to assemble for publication her research on sika deer. 1

	

	The field diaries consisted of observations documenting her research activities regarding wildlife, particularly sika deer in the central North Island region (e.g. Kaimanawa, Kaweka, Kuripapango).

	

	The diaries are very detailed containing not only research activities but also day to day activities.

	

	The field diaries are numbered chronologically (from No. 18 to No. 87, suggesting that perhaps the early part of the series is missing). Each of the diaries contain:

	

	• Dates

	• Area

	• Times of activities

	• Wildlife/nature observations

	

	Also she recorded conferences and meetings she attended as part of her diaries.

	

	Also, there are Snare Check Diaries (no. 88 -100) which are handwritten on small notepads. Typed versions are also available. The cover of notepads contain:

	Also, there are diary notes (1958-1966) including monthly reports, correspondence, autopsy forms and notes for hunters.

	In the diaries in some cases she annotated photograph numbers as references (e.g. PP0115, which related to those in series 23785 and 23786). During her field research she took numerous photographs. These consisted of black and white prints (occasionally colour prints), contact prints, negatives and colour slides. See series 23785 and 23786.

	However, for researchers wishing to cross reference the diaries and photographs, using the area names and dates is more efficient and less time consuming than using the references above, as the photographs are already listed with detailed information such as area, date and subject. Also quite a large amount of photographs do not contain reference numbers as mentioned above (e.g. PP0115).
