	Deposited plans (DP) and land transfer (LT) plans were plans deposited with the District Land Registrar that showed subdivision under the Land Transfer Act. The sequence of 'red' LT plans was unique to the Southland Land District.



	This record book was divided up according to land transfer plan, or deposited plan number. The volume covered DP 1 to 6,600, and 'red' LT plan 1 to 585. For the first 585 entries, therefore, there was a regular entry and a 'red' entry (referring to the 'red' LT plan of that number). As well as the plan number, and usually a brief title of the area the plan represented, each entry set out the blocks and lots shown on each land transfer or deposited plan. Beside them, a relevant certificate of title volume and folio reference was noted (where applicable). Any subsequent deposited plan numbers were also listed, as well as deeds index references when appropriate. Later entries did not always name the area which the plan covered.

	

	The volume was continually annotated and updated.



	There was an index at the start of the volume that was arranged alphabetically by the names of towns, settlements, extensions, estates, survey districts etc.
