They recorded the name of the first purchaser of land from the Crown, the names of lessors or licensees of Crown land, and also showed land reserved by the Crown for education, forestry, recreation and other purposes. 	Volumes A to E (and part of F) covered Crown land in Southland survey districts and hundreds. The other volumes were divided into outlying islands, settlements and towns. Within each type of land division, the pages were usually in alphabetical order (by the first letter of the survey district, town, settlement, etc).

	Each entry usually included:

	   -   block and section number of land concerned

	   -   area of the land (in acres, roods and perches)

	   -   survey plan number

	   -   the "system under which selected" (i.e. cash, free grant, auction etc)

	   -   application number

	   -   date of disposal

	   -   price paid

	   -   name of selector or grantee

	   -   certificate of title or Crown grant number and date

	   -   remarks (this often included the name of the act under which the land was disposed of)

	   -   if land was reserved, the purpose of this was noted, and occasionally Gazette references

	A number of entries (particularly those in the town volumes) also included lease numbers, and deeds index and warrant references were also regularly noted. All entries appear to have been stamped with "Ent'd. C.L. Reg." [entered Crown Land Register].

	Subsequent annotations were made to many entries into the 1950s.

	Allotment book K also had its own separate index volume tucked into the front.
