	Maori land referred to land owned by Maori and administered by the Maori Land Court. Maori land plans were prepared for any subdivision of Maori-owned land. The plans were also prepared to show roads on Maori land. These plans were originally held by the Chief Surveyor for each land district.

	The plans contained references to traverse books and field books where appropriate.

	The aperture cards of plans which were labelled "duplicate" were working copies, and not usually identical copies of the plans with the same number in the regular sequence of Maori land plans. Instead, many of them appear to have been enlarged versions or alternative views of the same area of land. They also included annotations regarding alienation and road legality.

	Both sequences of Maori land plans were incomplete, and not every plan in the original sequence had a corresponding plan in the duplicate sequence. 

	The original plans are still held by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).
