	The first volume of this series was divided into "Otago" and "Southland" sections. Pages in the Otago section were labelled "O [number]", while those in the Southland section were labelled "S [number]". It appears that those in the Otago section were numbered to intersperse with those in the Otago warrant books - mostly volume one, but some were also labelled volume two. In addition, in the early years of the warrant system, the application numbers in Otago and Southland seem to have been assigned from the same sequence.

	The duplicate volumes (which were labelled variously with "duplicate", "draft" and "office copy") were bound one volume to a volume, whereas the originals often bound more than one volume up together. Although many of the later pages of the first volume of originals were labelled with "volume 2", the second volume of originals begins with "volume 2, folio 1" and followed on exactly from where the first volume finished.

	These volumes contained details of the warrants granted, including:

	   -   number of application (sometimes a provisional title number or allotment book number was noted here instead; this column was excluded in later volumes)

	   -   the law under which the application was made

	   -   legal description of the land

	   -   area of the land

	   -   name, occupation and residence of applicant

	   -   details of payments and fees

	   -   nature of interest

	   -   date from which the applicant was entitled

	   -   any trusts, reservations and restrictions affecting the land

	   -   the resulting certificate of title reference number

	With the passing of the Land Transfer Act Amendment Act 1880, the system of Crown land administration changed. A system of warrants was introduced to authorise the issue of a certificate of title. This essentially replaced Crown grants and became the means of vesting land ownership from the Crown to individual. The warrants were in turn replaced by Section 116 certificates when the Land Transfer Act 1952 was introduced. However, Crown grants continued to be issued in special circumstances.
