This correspondence relates to land claims made by Dr George Evans concerning land brought through the New Zealand Company. The land in question was 50 town sections and 5000 rural acres within the Wellington region. George Samuel Evans (1802-1868) was an original member of the New Zealand Company and one the first settlers of Wellington, arriving on the Adelaide in 1839. During the 1850s he served on the Victoria Legislature Assembly.


Dr Evans returned to Wellington in 1865 and successfully prosecuted his land claim in 1866. The correspondence includes court documents and letters to FD Bell, the Commissioner of Land Claims, Dr Featherston, and Governor Grey.
