	These registers provide access to the Trial and Sentencing case files of the Timaru Courts. The registers detail prisoners who were tried and sentenced in the Supreme Court/High Court, and those who were tried in the Magistrate's Court/District Court but committed to the Supreme/High Court for sentencing.

	

	The registers are self indexed and recorded the name, age and nationality of the accused. They also included a summary of offences, court dates, the verdict and the sentence (if applicable) in addition to the relevant case file number; this information was collated in the registers, and then passed to the Police as their record of what occurred at Court.

	

	It is important when using the registers to check whether the case in question is a Trial file or a Sentence file. Each page of the registers are labelled 'Return of Prisoners Tried or Committed for Sentence'. The period of the Return of Prisoners Tried registers overlaps with the Trial and Sentencing registers; the Return of Prisoners Tried registers should be favoured as the source for file numbers, particularly for pre-1965 trials.

	In general, records containing information relating to criminal matters will no longer be restricted after 100 years has passed since the date of last action on the record. However some records, or parts of records, may be sealed or restricted for longer periods by a court order. Such restrictions would be applied to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993 and/or the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004, as well as other legislation which controls access to court records. Access to these records may be obtained via an application to the Timaru Courts
