	1. This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system. The series start and end dates are derived from the dates of the holdings.

	2. At present, not all plans are fully described at item level. Plans covering the number range 1 - 33065 (dating from 1871 - 1913) are listed at item level. For the remainder of  plans. the plan registers in AADX W3271 should be consulted in order to find a particular plan.

	This series is comprised of Public Works Department and Ministry of Works maps and plans. The plans include railways, buildings, roads and other works such as plant and machinery.

	

	The series contains three sequences: The largest sequence of plans are prefixed with 'PWD' (Public Works Department) and date from 1870 until 1960. A second sequence, prefixed with 'PWD MI' (Public Works Department, Middle Island) covers the period 1878-1884, when a separate office was established to administer the South Island. The third sequence, identified by the prefix 'MOW' (Ministry of Works) dates from 1960.

	1. Ministerial Plan Records Access Restriction

	All plan and file records pertaining to the construction, maintenance and repair of 260 Tinakori Rd (Premier House), 75 Woburn Rd (Vogel House) or any other ministerial property is restricted for 100 years from file closure on the grounds of national security.

	2. Parliamentary Records Access Restriction

	All Plan and File Records Pertaining to the Construction, Repair and Maintenance of Parliament Buildings are restricted for 100 years from date of record closure, on the ground of national security. This includes:

		Parliamentary Library (Museum St Annexe)
	

		Legislative Building (Parliament, Executive Wing)

	Also plans of operating prisons, courthouse and police stations cells- blocks and security agencies may be restricted. In the first instance please check with  Access Services to determine the restriction status.

	3 Ministry of Justice/Court Buildings

	All plan and file records pertaining to the construction, repair, maintenance and security of Ministry of Justice Court and other Sites are restricted for 100 years from the closing date of the record. Upon the expiration of 100 years the restriction will be reviewed

	4.  Preservation Access Statement

	Some records are protected under section 49(1)(a) of the Public Records Act 2005.

	Rolled maps/plans require special handing due to their size and storage conditions. Gloves and paper weights will be provided where required.
