The description of the records in this series has been enhanced through research of on-line material of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Australian War Memorial Museum, and 'The Long Long Trail' website. Initials and acronyms have been expanded where possible (of soldiers names and unit description). Many files only recorded a surname and service number of a soldier - first names have been added through further research.
The series start date is based on the establishment of Base Records. The end date is based on the assumption that series ended at the conclusion of the World War II.

The records in this series where created by Base Records, and relate to men and women who served in World War One in the following:

    
Expeditionary forces (British Expeditionary Forces, Australian Imperial Force, Canadian Expeditionary Force, French forces, etc.); 
    
Air forces (Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Air Force); 
    
Naval forces (Royal Navy, Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Royal Australian Navy, Women's Royal Naval Service); 
    
Nursing services (New Zealand Army Nursing Service, New Zealand General Hospitals, Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve, Territorial Force Nursing Service, Australian Army Nursing Service, Almeric Paget Military Massage Corps, Voluntary Aid Detachment, British and New Zealand Red Cross Societies). 

Many files deal with New Zealanders who served in the above mentioned forces and British residences who served in New Zealand forces and services based in England (for example, working at Headquarters, New Zealand Expeditionary Force, or in the New Zealand General Hospitals). Some files relate to family members seeking information on soldiers serving in overseas units. Other files document the notification of next-of-kin of the wounding or death of soldiers serving in overseas units.
The files also deal with gratuity payments for wartime military service, and detail the service of the soldier claiming the gratuity (in cases where a soldier had died, claims were made by the next of kin). Some of the files are small, and only contain the documentation of free passage on New Zealand Government Railways services (these documents in most cases contain rank and surname, and sometimes service number - where possible further research has been undertaken to expand the soldiers details).
Documented within the files of this series is the service of the many women who worked as nurses, kitchenhands, and maids in the various nursing services, Voluntary Aid Detachments, and New Zealand General and Convalescent Hospitals. Many of the nurses who worked in the New Zealand hospitals were British residents.
Also contained in this series are files on New Zealanders who trained as pilots in New Zealand and joined the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Aerial Service and Royal Air Force. These men enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, undertook their training, embarked for England with the reinforcements, and joined the respective air force service on arrival. Their files contain documentation on their enrolment, training and embarkation.

All records are open, except for reference enquiries from private individuals in sealed envelopes, which are restricted for 10 years from date of transfer to protect the privacy of enquirers. At the end of this 10 year period, the restrictions shall be reviewed jointly by the New Zealand Defence Force and Archives New Zealand. (Note: the sealed envelopes do not contain information about service personnel, they are enquiries from private individuals only).
Note: Reviews are not complete at this time.  All such files should therefore be regarded as restricted until such time as their status is updated to 'open' in Archway.  This applies even if the restriction expiry date, as recorded in the record list on Archway, has been reached or passed.
