The sentencing files in this series relate to: 



1. The sentencing of convicted criminal defendants from the New Plymouth District Court, who were referred to the High Court for sentencing. 
2. In criminal cases heard before the New Plymouth District Court where the defendant plead guilty, the case would be referred to the New Plymouth High Court sentencing sessions where a sentencing file would be generated. 



The contents of the files vary. In some cases the files detail evidence presented during the sentencing hearing, while all files detail the actual sentence handed out by the judge. 
The series ended in 2003 when the Courts moved to an electronic registration system for all criminal records.

	In general, records containing information relating to criminal matters will no longer be restricted after 100 years has passed since the date of last action on the record. However some records, or parts of records, may be sealed or restricted for longer periods by a court order.

	

	Access to criminal matters records less than 100 years old may be subject to restrictions. Such restrictions would be applied to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Privacy Act 1993 and/or the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004, as well as other legislation which controls access to court records. Access to these records may be obtained via an application to tthe relevant court.
