	This series consists of files from the Government Superannuation Fund filing system, which was created and maintained by The Treasury (through its Superannuation Division from 1950), and continued by the Government Superannuation Department from 1988. It also contains files inherited from predecessor superannuation funds of the public sector, which have been top-numbered and integrated into this series.

	All of the files in this series are arranged by the multiple number system of classification, with most being prefixed by ‘GS’ or ‘GSF’:

	

		GS 1/- : covers legislation including acts and amendments, orders in council, regulations and amendments, parliamentary commissions, and committees, and petitions;
	

		GS 2/- : covers Government Superannuation Board matters, such as policy decisions, agendas, claims committee reports and meetings;
	

		GS 3/- : covers contributory service – departmental inquiries and general matters, supplementary superannuation schemes;
	

		GS 4/- : covers general matters dealing with contributions paid by departments and employing authorities, refunds, intervals in service, and salary determinations;
	

		GS 5/- : covers purchase of service, bridging of intervals, pre-entry training, notional service;
	

		GS 6/- : covers retirement policy, medically unfit retirement, medical examination;
	

		GS 7/- : covers Superannuation benefits, capitalisation, cost-of-living adjustments, annuity for approved dependants;
	

		GS 8/- : covers accounting procedures, mortgages, annual accounts and subsidies; and
	

		GS 9/- : covers seminars, statistics, actuarial valuations and manuals.1


	This series documented the functions and organisational structure of the Government Superannuation Fund; Board policy and decision making; legislative processes; entitlements of contributors; and the effects of war, economic recession and social change.

	The Government Superannuation Fund filing system was discontinued on the abolition of the Government Superannuation Fund Department in 1998.

	Note: The miscellaneous files in series 21937 are possibly unregistered counterparts to the files in this series.
