Locally, licensing was exercised through 22 licensing committees comprising a Magistrate as chairman and four members elected by the territorial local authorities. Licensing was also governed centrally by a Licensing Commission. These registers record the decisions of the Mid-Canterbury Licensing Committee. From 1929 the Ellesmere and Selwyn Districts were known as the Mid-Canterbury Licensing Committee. In 1962 the Canterbury Licensing Committee oversaw licensing applications.
