	These case files dealt with petitions made to the Dunedin Supreme Court for the exercise of its jurisdiction.  The petitions dealt with a wide range of issues, including the winding up of deceased estates, land transfers, and matters relating to insolvency and trustees.  The files include the original petition and all papers relevant to the resolving of the legal matter, including affidavits, memorandum, Court orders and judgments.

	Prior to 1908 petitions were included as part of the miscellaneous case files.  After 17 December 1954, petitions were again included as part of the miscellaneous case files.

	All Miscellaneous/General Register court files held by Archives New Zealand are subject to a minimum access restriction period of 60 years from the date of file closure.

	Files containing sensitive personal information, or information about criminal cases are restricted for 100 years from their dates of closure, in line with relevant legislation.

	Files containing adoption information are restricted indefinitely, in line with relevant legislation.

	Individual file listings are not able to be viewed on Archway, and all file listings have a precautionary 100 year/indefinite access restriction applied; archivists must consult the appropriate controlling register (and/or the file) to determine the correct access restriction of individual files.

	Note: This means that any files over 100 years old may be restricted.
