Under the Mining Act 1898, witnesses giving evidence who were resident at a distance from the place of hearing, were able to give their evidence in another Warden's Court or District Court.  These files contain the notices of desire to take evidence received by the Dunedin Warden's Court from other Warden's Courts.  They requested the Dunedin Warden to take the evidence of witnesses resident in the Dunedin region, to be used at trials or hearings at other Warden's Court.  


Included in these files are the notice of desire from the originating Warden's Court, notices of time and place of examination sent to witnesses, and other related correspondence.  The evidence itself was forwarded to the relevant Warden's Court, and is not contained on these files.
