	These files record details of Miscellaneous Applications heard by the Christchurch Magistrate's/District Court. Miscellaneous cases covered legal matters not already covered by other court series (e.g. civil proceedings, criminal, and bankruptcy).

	The files include applications for committal to institutions (for reasons of mental health, alcohol and drug addiction, or incapacity caused by old age), extensions of licensing or shop hours, trade licence applications (such as auctioneers, real estate agents, second-hand dealers and sharebrokers), applications for legitimisation, access and custody arrangements regarding children, immigration removals, marriage/employment consent for minors, and applications under the Births, Deaths and Marriages legislation. Information about apprentices, and applications under the Tenancy Act can also be found amongst these files.

	On occasion, files relate to adoptions, criminal and civil cases.

	All Miscellaneous court files held by Archives New Zealand are subject to a minimum access restriction period of 60 years from the date of file closure.

	Files containing sensitive personal information, or information about criminal cases are restricted for 100 years from their dates of closure, in line with relevant legislation.

	Files containing adoption information are restricted indefinitely, in line with relevant legislation.

	Individual file listings are not able to be viewed on Archway, and all file listings from this series have a precautionary indefinite access restriction applied; archivists must consult the appropriate controlling register (and/or the file) to determine the correct access restriction of individual files.
