The Mortgagors Relief Act 1931 allowed a mortgagor to seek relief from their obligations from a Supreme Court judge, who could postpone payments of interest, reduce the rate of interest payable or reduce or remit totally any arrears of interest payable.  The 1933 Mortgagors and Tenants Relief Act saw the establishment of the Adjustment Commission to assist the Supreme Court in this work, often making recommendations to the Court on the best course of action in certain cases. 


The 1934-35 Rural Mortgagors Final Adjustment Act established the Court of Review which dealt solely with these cases. The Adjustment Commission reported to the Review Court.


 This series of files relate to cases, in the Rangiora area, where applicants sought to postpone or reduce their payments, and rate, of interest, or to reduce or remit arrears of interest payable. In addition, Adjustment Commission orders were filed at the Court of Review, and appeals against those orders were filed with the Court.
