	These files record sales and leases of farm land (anything over two hectares), compensation claims for land requistioned for Public Works and Serviceman's Settlement, objections to valuations and duties affected by valuations, and the outcome or orders made.

	From 1946-1969 cases of compensation, appeals and objections were registered in separately from sale and lease consents in "miscellaneous" volumes. The indexes to the registers and files (series 27284) cover both the miscellaneous and sale/lease volumes, and the files appear to have runs of miscellaneous case files interspersed with the other files and also runs where they are separately bundled.  

	The Serviceman’s Settlement and Land Sales Act 1943 established the Land Sales Court, and a number of district Land Sales Committees. The Act had the dual purpose of providing machinery for the compulsory acquisition of land for the settlement of discharged servicemen, and the control of sales and leases of land.

	The Land Valuation Court Act 1948 abolished both the Land Sales Court and district Land Sale Committees as from 1 January 1949 and established the Land Valuation Court and Land Valuation Committees. All transactions for the disposal of any land, whether by way of sale, transfer, or lease had to have the consent of the Court before they could be completed. The Land Valuation Court was responsible for administering claims for compensation under the Public Works Act 1928; claims for compensation under section 29 of the Serviceman's Settlement and Land Sales Act 1943; applications for consent of court for sale or lease of land; objections to valuations under the Valuation of Land Act 1925; and appeals against valuations of land for death duty, gift duty and stamp duty purposes.

	The Land Valuation Proceedings Amendment Act 1968 abolished the Land Valuation Courts, and established a separate administrative division of the Supreme Courts to take over the jurisdiction of the former Land Valuation Court. The Land Valuation Proceedings Amendment Act 1977 substituted this system with Land Valuation Tribunals operating under the Magistrate's Court.
