The reports were written by the Akaroa Police, and addressed to the Resident Magistrate sitting at Akaroa. At the time the Resident Magistrate and the Police Magistrate were the same individual in Akaroa, an arrangement that lasted until 1885.
The reports  list in columns the following information:

The 'Remarks' column  focussed on the conditions of the hotel, and covered issues such as the cleanliness of beds and linen,  and whether the conditions of the license are being met..
